在遥远的古代，勤劳的土家先民耕种田地很辛苦，还要为浇水奔忙，为了避免大旱之年，田地焦裂，庄稼枯死，土家人在长期的生产劳动中创造出了各式各样的水车，将低处的水转到高处注入农田，有用脚踏动木轮转动的，有用手摇动木轮抽水的，后来创造了一种圆盘子，不需人力借助水的冲击力自行转动，然后输入农田。这些水车又被利用来磨面、舂碾、造纸、抽水灌田等，充分显示了土家先民的聪明才智。
